More Than a Paycheque
At GYM, youth employment is an important part of youth development. A first job provides more than income—it creates responsibility, builds confidence, develops workplace skills, and gives young people the opportunity to discover what they are capable of. Employment also creates another connection to school, mentors, and community. By providing meaningful paid opportunities throughout the high school years, we support young people as they gain experience, work toward graduation, and begin thinking about what comes next.
For many young people, their first job with GYM becomes the beginning of a much longer journey.
Opportunities to Work and Lead
Young people are an important part of what makes GYM and the mâmawêyatitân centre work. High school students are employed in meaningful roles that allow them to develop skills while contributing to programs and services used by their community.
Youth work as program mentors, sport and recreation leaders, community ambassadors, cafeteria staff, custodial staff, event support, media and communications assistants, and in other roles throughout the centre.
Many begin with only a few hours of work each week and gradually take on greater responsibility as their skills, confidence, and experience grow. Some of the young people leading programs today first came to GYM as participants themselves.
Building What's Next
For young people ready to take the next step, GYM Building Futures Collective creates opportunities to continue gaining paid work experience beyond the walls of the centre.
Through property maintenance, renovations, construction, and community revitalization projects, young people develop practical skills while working alongside experienced staff and tradespeople. These opportunities can provide a bridge from high school employment into full-time work, skilled trades, and long-term careers.
Our goal is not simply to help young people find their first job. It is to create pathways that allow them to build skills, establish independence, and create a future in the communities they are proud to call home.
